Portrait Study of William J L Baillie PPRSA
Artist: Rae, Barbara, OBE RA RSA · b. 1943
This work is a study for the portrait by the artist within the mixed media President’s Portrait of William J L Baillie PPRSA (2000.152). Excerpt from email sent to RSA Collections Curator by the artist on 26 June 2013: “The starting point of the work was a photograph that I took of Bill in his house at Esslemont Road. I put an Indian cloth behind him. This was the starting point for a series of screenprint monotypes using water based media. I then painted on the print using acrylic paint and used flakes of metallic confetti from an Indian supermarket in London. The side panel has interpretations of some of Bill's paintings and favourite images, tigers, fruit, and stripes. There were quite a few other images associated with this project which I may wish to exhibit at some point.” (hard copy on file in Acquisitions: Mixed Gifts & Bequests and in artist’s file)
