Cadenhead, James, RSA

1858 – 1927

The son of an Aberdeenshire advocate, James Cadenhead was educated at the University of Aberdeen before attending the Edinburgh School of Art (formerly the Trustees Academy) in Edinburgh in 1878 and the RSA Life Class where fellow students A G Sinclair ARSA and J H Lorimer RSA became lifelong friends.. In 1882 he travelled to Paris and studied in the atelier of Carolus Duran until 1884 he then returned to Scotland and settled in Edinburgh. He was influenced by Whistler and was also involved with the work of Professor Patrick Geddes. In addition to his paintings he also etched. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1880 until 1926 becoming an Associate Member in 1902 and an Academician in 1921. In 1886 he was one of the founder members of the New English Art Club, and In 1912 he was a founding member of the Society of Eight. He contributed illustrations to A Stodart Walker's "A Beggar's Wallet" in 1905, a fund-raising publication in aid of funds for the Royal Victoria Hospital for Consumption in Edinburgh.
