Muirhead, David Thomson, ARA ARWS

1867 – 1930

Initially trained as an architect before studying at the RSA Schools and Westminster School of Art. Moved to London in 1894, elected ARA in 1928, ARWS 1924. He was a member of the Society of 25 Artists and of the new English Art Club. McEwan, Peter J.M.; The Dictionary of Scottish Art and Architecture, 2nd rev ed, 2004, Glengarden Press, p.401; states that he "....Painted estuaries and landscapes with borad vistas, often in East Anglia, in a competent but pedestrian manner, using quiet colours and subtle harmonies." His exhibited works include views on the Medway at Rochester, at Ely in Cambridgeshire, on the River Ouse in Sussex and Stonehaven. Following his death, his brother James S.Muirhead gifted a cheque for £1,000.00 to the Royal Scottish Academy to endow a Trust known as the David Muirhead Memorial Fund, through which drawings, and watercolours primarily, are purchased from the Academy's annual exhibition for the RSA Collections.
