Cameron, David Young, Sir, RSA RA RSW RE

1865 – 1945

Born in Glasgow, the son of a Minister. Trained at Glasgow School of Art and the RSA Life School and later at the Academie Colarossi in Paris in 1902. Made his name initially as an etcher in the 1890s but also became known for his landscapes in oil and watercolours. Produced a series of paintings of World War I battle fields and then turned his attention to French and Scottish landscapes. Although younger than the Glasgow Boys he was associated with them in the 1890s exhibiting with them at the Grafton Galleries in London in 1893. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1886 until 1938 and became an Associate Member in 1904 and an Academician in 1918. He also became a Royal Academician in 1920. He was knighted in 1924 and became the King's Limner for Scotland in 1933. He declined the invitation to have his name put forward for President of the RSA on more than one occasion.
