Portrait of Emma and Janet
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
A double portrait of the artist's two sisters. Emma, the younger of the two is at the left and Janet at the right. The sisters jointly and individually feature in a series of portraits executed by Gillies.
Emma shared Gillies' artistic bent and studied ceramics at Edinburgh College of Art.
The adoption of a landscape format serves to emphasize the close physical bond between the sisters and indeed between them and their painter brother, and creates a very informal yet intimate study.
The work may have been painted in 1925 after Gillies' return from Inverness where he briefly held a teaching post at Inverness Academy, or on his appointment as a part-time tutor at Edinburgh College of Art later that same year.
