The still life was probably executed by Gillies in his home at 162 Willowbrae Road, Edinburgh, to which he moved from Haddington with his widowed mother and his two sisters in 1929, or in the painting department at Edinburgh College of Art where he was by this date oft his work on the teaching staff.
