A Tuscan Hill Town
Artist: Wilson, William, OBE RSA RSW · 1905-1972
Wilson first learnt etching whilst attending evening classes at Edinburgh College of Art, where he came under the tutelage of Adam Bruce Thomson OBE RSA (1885-1976). Recognising Thomson’s talent, Thomson encouraged him to apply to ECA as a full time student. The two remained friends throughout Wilson’s life.
The present work appears to be a lifetime impression from the original copper printing plate vide RSA 2018.001(verso) and for a later impression from this pulled by Leena Nammari vide RSA 2019.020. Vide also 2020.0010 for Wilson’s original pencil sketch. The above are all catalogued as “San Gimignano” being the title inscribed on the drawing.
