Piazza Santa Annunciata, Florence
Artist: Gordon, John Edward · b. 1964
The artist was in Italy on a 1996 RSA John Kinross Travel Scholarship.
To the left stands the monumental bronze equestrian statue of Ferdinand I which faces the Duomo, designed by Brunelleschi.
The piazza depicted was also commenced by Brunelleschi and marks the first use of proportions and harmony which would become the defining principles o9f Renaissance architecture.
As originally conceived the roundels in the spandrels between the arches of the loggia were to have been left plain (as depicted here) but following Brunelleschi's death Andrea dell'Robbia was commissioned to execute the ten tondi, or roundels, with their distinctive white figures against a blue ground which fill the spaces today.
The two fountains at right are the work of Pietro Taccà and were originally intended for the Italian port city of Livorno, where a replica was subsequently installed.
