The artist, an Painting Graduate from Glasgow School of Art, was in Italy on a 1995 RSA John Kinross Travel Scholarship.
This view was probably taken from the high ground on the South side of the River Arno looking north to the heart of Florence.
The Duomo is picked out at upper right.
