Untitled George Rowney & Co Ltd Series B70 Spiral-Bound Sketchbook
Artist: Schotz, Benno, RSA · 1891-1984
The sketchbook contains 14 leaves with black ink drawings of olive trees with human forms suggested by the branch and trunk formations, and 10 blank leaves. All are unsigned.
Schotz makes reference to his drawing olive trees in Israel in his autobiography, where he describes the process thus; “While I am drawing I really don’t know what the result might be. Only later, when I study it after completion, its subject matter begins to shine through. At the time of drawing, all I am concerned about is a unity of composition and a harmony of feeling. When I combine a few trees onto one page I have to make sure that they all express the same mood, and that their shapes compliment each other.
We all see differently, and even I, when I go back to the tree I have drawn to reassure myself that I had seen right, would hardly recognise it again, for it all depends on the light and the time of day, and on my own mental and spiritual condition of the moment.”
