Person in Bed

Artist: Keir, Henry [Harry] · 1902-1977

Benno Schotz; Bronze in My Blood, Gordon Wright Publishing, Edinburgh, 1981, pp.147-14; although there is no specific reference to the present work, Schotz recounts how he was first introduced to Keir in the early 1930s by his parents –in-law Mr and Mrs Donald Saxton and they remained close fort he next 15 years. He was a polisher by trade who was not wealthy enough o purchase oil paints to pursue his hobby, and used his polishing varnishes and stains to “colour” his paintings which focused on the poverty of Glasgow life.Schotz gave what assistance he could, securing clients and promoting his name.

It is probable that Schotz purchased the present work direct from Keir, or may have been given it by way of thanks fro his support.

The Nomination Books for the RSA show that Schotz seconded Archibald A McGlashan’s nomination of Keir for election as an Associate member (ARSA)in 1959 (Keir had previously been nominated in 1957 by William Crosbie, seconded by Jack Coia).
