Portrait of David Roberts RA HRSA
Artist: Gordon, John Watson, Sir, PPRSA RA RSA · 1788-1864
Despite his decision to live outwith Scotland, David Roberts maintained strong ties with many of his fellow Scottish artists and took a keen interest in the Academy's affairs.
This mutual respect is manifest in the present work, which was painted by the then President of the Academy. He gifted it on completion to the Academy's nascent collection of portraits of artists. This had been inspired by the famous collection of artist Self-Portraits created at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
