Portrait of Margery Porter 1

Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973

one of a number of portraits executed by Gillies of Miss Annie Margaret [Margery] Porter, the daughter of friends of his, and a neice of S J Peploe RSA.

The single light pink carnation held by the sitter is generally considered to represent the undying love of a mother. The subject remained a spinster throughout her life, however she was an only child, and her mother, after whom she was named died aged 69 of abdominal cancer of 4 months duration on 1943-03-22. The pink carnation can also represent gratitude or admiration, whilst a dark pink one can symbolise love.
