Gardenstown

The prominent central building is Gardenstown New Church viewed from the top of The Green looking north-west down towards Church Street. Completed in 1899 as the United Presbyterian Church, the Church was linked to the United Free Church in 1916, and in 1929 became a Church of Scotland building. It remained thus until the building was sold to the congregation in 2016 and continues to serve the communutiy as Gardenstown New Church.
Comparison with a photograph of the scene reveals that Gillies has deployed a significant degree of artistic license in the scale and arrangement of the flanking cottages.
The view as depicted is changed fundamentally today by the addition to the west end of the church of a substantial two-storey extension providing much needed utilities, which was completed in 1990.
McPherson [2024] writes that the work is painted with a turbulence of colour and gesture that shakes all the forms, creating a sense of uneasiness.
