Artist: Fraser, Alexander George, ARSA · 1785-1865

The sitter looks to be aged about 40 years.

There is another self portrait by him, landscape format, showing him wearing an embroidered house coat and seated at his easel, in e Collections of Hospitalfield, bequeathed by Patrick Allan-Fraser HRSA in 1890. Oil on canvas, it is dated 1854 and whilst he looks of similar age he is depicted wearing round spectacles, suggesting that it is later than the present work in the RSA Collections (https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/self-portrait-128627/view_as/grid/search/makers:alexander-george-fraser-17861865-1194095/page/1)
