there is a large sand and gravel open-cast mine, or quarry, at Outerston Quarry, Temple, whilst there is also a major coal field in the neighbourhood of Rosewell, Howgate and Temple which was the subject of an unsuccessful bid to be mined using open-cast, to Lothian Council in 2013 and was rejected by them in 2017.
