Gillies had moved from his native Haddington with his mother and sisters Jenny and Emma to Willowbrae Road, Edinburgh in 1929. He made a number of studies of his mother and his sisters, both direct portraits and studies fro more elaborate figurative works, as here. The two women featured represent his mother and his sister Jenny
