study for Westwater's Marriage Present
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The present work is a squared preparatory study for an oil painting.
'Westwater's Marriage Present', oil on canvas, 76.2 x 111.8cm, about 1936, was originally painted for and gifted to Robert Heriot [Peter] Westwater ARSA (1905-62), a contemporary of Gillies' at ECA who later joined the staff as a part time lecturer, on the occasion of his marriage in 1933 to the Scottish architect and fellow ECA student Emily Lind Maclennan. The couple subsequently divorced.
The finished oil was lent to the RSA Gillies Centenary Exhibition in 1998 where the present study was also shown.
