Angel of Mercy
Artist: McMurdo, Wendy, RSA · b. 1962
The drawing was executed by Wendy McMurdo whilst on her 1985 RSA John Kinross Travel Scholarship to Florence. It was taken into safe keeping by the donor after the artist had exhibited it in Dumfries during an Artist in Residence post with Dumfries & Galloway Art Association, which was based in Gracefield Art Centre, Dumfries with Jennifer Wilson [the donor of the present work] as director. There were two exhibitions mounted, marking McMurdo’s arrival and her departure; the latter under the title ‘Lasting Impressions.’ The present work was hung in the stairwell at Gracefield during the ‘Introduction and Welcome’ type exhibition at the start of the residency. This happened immediately prior to McMurdo leaving Scotland to take up another scholarship in the United States of America and Jennifer Wilson took the drawing into her safe keeping at the close of the exhibition and was forgotten about for 35 years.
