Still Life - Yellow Jug and Striped Cloth
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
A still life with a second still life group set up in an adjacent room at back right and a stack of the artist's pictures stood against the wall to the left.
Amongst the subjects taught by Gillies at Edinburgh College of Art was still life and he kept his hand in exploring and exploiting the subject in parallel with his landscapes.
There is an unusual reality to the striped cloth but there is an unconvincing perspective to the principal still life group, even allowing for the exaggerated tilting of the table top which became a feature of Gillies still life paintings during the 1950s.
