View of Edinburgh from Bonnington

Artist: Bough, Samuel, RSA · 1822-1878

There is an almost identical painting entitled "Edinburgh from Bonnington" in a private collection reproduced in colour in "The Dictionary of Scottish Painters 1600 to the Present" (Harris, Paul and Halsby, Julien, 1998) on page 20. Bough exhibited another similarly titled work at the RSA Exhibition in 1856, catalogue number 175, "Edinburgh From Bonnington" which may have been either the Diploma Work or the piece in the private collection. This other version was included in the Sam Bough Exhibition at Bourne Fine Art, Dundas Street, Edinburgh 2014-10-03 - 2014-11-08 where its details were given as oil on canvas, 25 x 34 inches, signed and inscribed with title.

Vide also RSA 2022.0016 which is a watercolour heightened with white painting on paper dated July 1853, which compositionally is an almost exact match for the present work, and could be the original sketch from which the artist's RSA AX 1856 oil was painted.
