Merrills
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The location of the painting remains uncertain; 'Merrills,' which is inscribed on the verso face and has been interpreted as the title of the work, does not appear as a location in the Gazetteer of Scotland. The scene is not dissimilar to other trees by the river painted by Gillies and which can be identified specifically as being on the River Tyne near his native Haddington, and Merrills may reflect a local name for this specific bend, or pool on the river, or may be something else altogether.
