Mediterranean Landscape, with Overcast Sky
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The painting shows a heavy cubist influence and is very close to some of William Crozier ARSA's Italian landscapes in terms of subject and handling, though the sombre mood is more typically Gillies.
The immediate inspiration for Gillies was his trip to France and Italy on an Edinburgh College of Art Travelling Scholarship in 1923-24. Whilst in Paris in 1923 he saw Post Impressionist and Cubist works in the raw for the first time.
