Restalrig Village
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The present work appears to be a development from the earlier oil G.1992.047 and handled very differently.
The view is looking north east from the end of Restalrig Road South in the north eastern suburbs of Edinburgh into which the original Restalrig village has been consumed.
Gillies has deployed significant artistic license, it being impossible in reality to align the churchyard gateposts (here lacking the distinctive wrought iron archway) gable ended building and church. He has also provided a whitewashed property at the end of the disappearing road to right of centre in the background in place of the natural stone built crow-stepped gable gabled frontage which actually occupies the space and is more correctly depicted in G.1992.047.
Another similar work was sold at Christie's London rooms on 2007-10-24, lot 40, oil on board, c.1932-34.
