If Pleasure Could Be Sin

Artist: Renee-Cemmick, Marina · b. 1994

The present work was executed during her Kinross Scholarship during part of which she shared a flat with fellow GSA graduate and John Kinross Scholar, Gregori Mora Pujadas [known as Gori Mora]. Just 4 days after arriving in Florence the artist took unwell and had to return home. Her second stint in Florence was again broken when the death of her grandmother forced a second unexpected return home. The feelings around her bereavement were an important factor in her response to her surroundings. RSA 2019.010 is based on this drawing whilst RSA 2019.011 was inspired by a sculpture encountered in the Monumental Cemetery in Milan.

The subject matter is drawn from a sculpture of Eve which the artist encountered in the Romanticismo exhibition in the Galleria d’Italia in Milan during her Residency in Florence. It has been cut from a sketchbook and served as a preliminary study for RSA 2019.010.
