A Welsh Castle
Artist: Wilson, William, OBE RSA RSW · 1905-1972Printer: Nammari, Leena Rustom, RSA · b. 1970
the original copper printing plate was drawn by William Wilson and impressions taken from it by him during his lifetime. This impression was taken from RSA 2018.012(recto). The image on the verso face of ‘A Welsh Castle’ has been reduced down the right hand edge (cf lifetime impression in GMA2259 where the plate mark measures 30.0 x 33.0cm). This observation means that the present image must post-date 1940, the date of ‘A Welsh Castle.’ 'A Welsh Castle’ does not appear to be a faithful record of a specific castle but R.H.Rodger has identified the detailing of the entrance gateway and the general massing atop a rocky outcrop on the coast as bearing strong comparison with Harlech Castle in Gwynedd, North-West Wales, which probably served as Wilson’s ultimate inspirational model.
