Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
one of a number of paintings executed by Gillies during or immediately after his visit to Florence in March 1924 after 6 months studying under L'Hote in Paris on an ECA Post-Graduate scholarship in company of fellow ECA graduate William Geissler. The stay lasted only a couple of months and Gillies was back home in the Spring of 1924.
The exact location has not been identified but was presumably close to Florence.
The brushwork shows the influence of Post Impressionistic paintings, not least the work of Cezanne, which Gillies would have encountered for the first time in the raw on his travels to France in 1923.
