Mallaig
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The work was probably painted in the artist's home in Haddington, from sketches done on a trip to Mallaig. he is recorded as having taken a painting trip there in both 1926 and 1928.
There is a pencil and watercolour study of a near identical view signed and dated 1928 in a Private Collection which suggests the present work was painted from it following the latter trip.
The influence of Post-impressionist and Cubist works which he had encountered in the raw for the first time in his life in 1924 on his Edinburgh College of Art Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship is evident in the palette and handling of this work.
