Allan's original oil painting was first exhibited at the RA AX in 1816 (cat.235) titled "Circassian Chief Selling Captives" from where purchased by the Earl of Wemyss and March. It was lent to the RSA Centenary Exhibition in 1926 (cat.104) by one of the Earl's descendants.
