The Bracelet

Artist: Macnee, Daniel, Sir, PPRSA RSA · 1806-1882

The identity of the sitter is not known but there is a tenderness to the work which suggests that she was likely related to the artist.

The lack of a wedding band on her finger suggests she is an unmarried woman and her features suggests a young woman in her late teens or early twenties.

She is dressed for a ball and is depicted in the process of putting on items of jewellery; what appears to be a matching necklace lies on her lap.

MacNee and his first wife Margaret McGee had at least ten children and if this is indeed one of them, then it is possibly his eldest child Margaret (b.1827) or one of her sisters Ann (b.1832) or Isabella Jardine (b.1833).
