Storm Clouds near Elie
Artist: Cadenhead, James, RSA · 1858-1927
The farm to the right appears to be identical to that featured in Cadenhead's etching 'The Farm' (2006.042.6). The architectural style, especially the pantiled roof of the farm outbuildings in that print suggest that the location is Elie in Fife, rather than Ely in Cambridgeshire. The impression of this print in the British Museum collection is inscribed 'Storm Clouds near Eli' [sic].
Fife does not appear as a location in any of Cadenhead's works shown at the RSA Annual Exhibitions, with the exception of a work titled 'The Howe of Fife' which was in the 1909 exhibition (cat.87).
The present work therefore has been tentatively dated to around this time also.
