Paton was working on drawings for this painting at Lamlash on the Isle of Arran in 1856. The original oil is painted on millboard, signed and dated 1857, and was purchased by Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow in 1903. it was exhibited at the RSA (1857, cat 230) lent by Alexander Hill, and at the RA (1860, cat 316). The subject matter appears to come from Tennyson [?Idylls of the King]
Hill purchased Paton's oil painting with a view to having it engraved and lent the picture to the RSA Annual Exhibition in 1857.
