The artist, an architecture graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, was in Italy in September 1997 on a 1996 RSA John Kinross Travel Scholarship.

The drawing shows the dome of the church of S.Frediano in Cestello under heavy scaffolding and sheeting to allow essential renovation work to be undertaken.

It thus serves as a critical historic record of the building at a precise moment in time rather than a mere pictorial representation of a key renaissance building.
