Safe House

Artist: Summerton, Edward, RSA · b. 1962

The piece is cited in the catalogue to the Ages of Wonder Exhibition, RSA, 2017-18, p.114; “Summerton’s Safe House is revolutionary in another way, in that it is the first artwork to enter the collections that is designed to be used, changing or perhaps even being replaced as a result. Safe House contains a tent that is available to academy members and scholars in receipt of awards. It can be used on residencies, travelling scholarships or artist expeditions, or should a member become homeless or destitute. On using the tent they must record their journey on one of the postcards that form part of the work, but should the tent be lost or stolen, Summerton will replace it ‘on receipt of an exciting and informative description of the event.’
