Venus Anadyomene

Artist: Colvin, Calum, OBE RSA · b. 1961

One of an edition of ten photographs, this photograph is based on the painting 'Venus Anadyomene' by Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) which is in the National Gallery of Scotland collection although Colvin has reversed the figure of Venus from left to right. It is part of a series of photographs produced at this time by Colvin which referenced and recreated iconic art works by Titian, Rubens, Etty, David Scott and Canova. In an e-mail to Collections Assistant of 20th September 2007 Callum Colvin describes the production of the piece "The 'Venus Anadyoneme' piece is indeed 1998, but isn't digital photography. It is a c-type colour photograph and was the original exhibition print for the 'Sacred and Profane' exhibition at the SNGMA in 1998. There is a National Galleries catalogue of the exhibition in which it features....The work/exhibition toured to the National Machado de Castro Museum, Coimbra Portugal in '98 also. This print is one of the last I made using 'traditional' colour photographic techniques ie is is an analogue print made on a colour enlarger rather than a digital print. It is one of an edition of ten although this print is unique in the process used, and in its scale. " There is a hard copy of this e-mail in Callum Colvin's file.
