The Amphibian
Artist: Jackson, Charles d'Orville Pilkington, ARSA · 1887-1973
Identiifed by the sculptor's grand daughter, Kirsty Jackson, as being a remnant of a fountain group titled 'Foam', see artist file for photogrpah and documentation. Comparison of the present piece with a black and white photograph of 'Foam' in the book 'Scottish Sculpture Today' by T S Halliday with an essay by George Bruce, 1943, however suggests some differences and the present piece may therefore be a prototype for the actual sea creatures that formed part of the finished fountain.
The original fountain group in plaster was exhibited at the Palace of Arts Empire Exhibition Scotland, 1938 (cat.727) https://sculpture.gla.ac.uk/view/object.php?id=msib7_1205419239
