Artist: Guild, Derrick, RSA · b. 1963
One of a series of 10 identically framed paintings each in an oval mount, of a single tulip head, which were hung on the Gallery walls behind a circular wooden drop leaf table on a central column with arched feet, on which were arranged a series of tall cylindrical glass vases containing numerous cut tulips. The table was set on a raised white painted plinth and around its outer edges were suspended on cup hooks a series of wooden oval plaques. During the course of the exhibition the artist sat at a second smaller wooden hall table on turned and tapered legs on which a single straight sided glass vase containing cut tulips was placed. The artist sat on a more modern but traditional chair and applied paint to the petals of the cut flowers to imitate the natural variegated patterns.
This painting, alongside two framed digital colour photographic prints of the installation and a digital film recording the installion constitute the artist’s Diploma Deposit; Follower is the first truly multi-disciplinary diploma work to enter the collection.
