John Pitcairn of Pitcairns
Artist: Raeburn, Henry, Sir, RA · 1756-1823
The present work and its companion picture of the sitter's wife are believed to be amongst the last works painted by Raeburn.
In 1924 the Commercial Bank of Scotland used an engraving of this portrait as part of its design for a new series of bank notes. Pitcairn had served as the first Chairman of Directors when the bank was originally formed in 1810. The design remained in use until at least 1943.
