Trees on the Tyne, Haddington
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The work is handled in a pseudo-cubist manner similar to other works executed by Gillies following his trip to France in 1923 on an Edinburgh College of Art Travel Scholarship.
During this visit he saw Post Impressionist and Cubist work for the first time in the raw and the influence is evident in a number of works which he executed following his return.
This is an even more advanced rendition of a familiar spot on the outskirts of his native Haddington than for example G.1991.075.
