Park on the Tyne, Haddington
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The present work depicts a stretch of riverscape familiar to Gillies and which he painted frequently whilst still living in his native Haddington.
This was probably painted shortly after Gillies' return from his Edinburgh College of Art Travelling Scholarship to France and Italy in 1923-24 where he encountered Post Impressionist and Cubist work for the first time in the raw.
It makes interesting comparison with two other paintings of the same stretch of water which reveal the increasing influence of his visit in progressive degrees; G.1991.075 and G.1992.028
