Temple from the Cottage at Dusk
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The work was painted in the sun lounge at Gillies home in Temple village, Midlothian.
It shows great freedom of handling and expression in the view through the window in an impressionistic manner that recalls the late landscapes of William McTaggart RSA where light grounds feature prominently and the paint is thinly applied.
At the extreme left dressed in a pink cardigan, her hands held behind her back stands a brown-haired woman gazing at the landscape beyond the framing window.
This is the artist's elder sister Janet with whom he lived all his life. Janet died at Temple cottage in 1960, predeceasing both Gillies and her mother. Her presence, coupled with the small vase of flowers on the window sill at foreground right may indicate that this is some sort of memorial to her.
