Spinningdale
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
In July of 1939 in company with his friend from student days at Edinburgh College of Art, Robert Harold 'Tiny' Morton, Gillies travelled to Spinningdale on the Dornoch Firth. The present work, one of the first works painted by Gillies following his move to Temple that same year was painted from sketches made on the July visit.
It compresses spatial depth and deploys a familiar motif in the central roadway disappearing into the distance.
