Comrie Church

Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973

The village of Comrie was a popular early painting haunt of Samuel John Peploe RSA who executed a number of small oils there in the early years of the twentieth century.

Gillies may have painted this small oil in situ or it could have been worked up in the studio from sketches made on his visit there.

According to the catalogue for the Gillies Retrospective exhibition in 1970, this visit took place in 1920 in company with Alan Ronald and George Watson. That exhibition featured a work in oil on paper on board, 16 x 20 inches, dated 1920 titled Comrie, lent by the artist.
