The exact location has not been identified but the agitated expressionsitic brushwork suggest a probable production date of the 1930s. It is likely therefore to be somewhere in the Lothians and may be an early work following the artist's move to Temple village in 1939.

It is more than a depiction of a specific location with Gillies apparently more concerned with the painterly values of the work, with the scurrying clouds reflecting the warm hues of the walls and roofs of the foreground row of buildings and the ochres of the surrounding fields.
