On a single sheet a head and shoulders self portrait engaging the viewer front on, with a subsequent and slighter sketch of the artist standing full length.
The poses match the self portrait of Gillies, full length, which occupies the central section of his large and important oil painting "Interior" of 1938 (G.1991.388).
