This sketchbook was filled by Michie in 1962 during a visit to Amsterdam with his mother Anne Redpath RA RSA. Redpath's own sketchbook from this visit is also in the RSA collections (also from the David Michie Bequest) and makes interesting comparison not only in terms of stylistic comparison but because there is a direct correlation between certain of the views; a building being sketched from one side by Redpath and from another by Michie, for example.
