Adam also Wrote "The Moral Sentiments"

Sculptor: Wyllie, George, RSA · 1931-2012Author: Smith, Dr Adam · 1723-1790

In a telephone conversation of 2006-05-24 with the Collections Assistant, "George Wyllie explained that he is a great admirer of Adam Smith. He described his/ Diploma Work as an 'object' rather than a 'sculpture'. He also confirmed that the proper/ title of the piece is 'Adam also Wrote "The Moral Sentiments"/ In addition to "The Wealth of Nations" he stressed the importance of "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" as Adam Smith's favourite book and one he personally regarded very/ highly. ...George Wyllie was keen to stress the essence of Adam Smith's writings as "The/ moral aspect of economics ...something that we should be doing now" and how modern/ day politicians use Adam Smith's writings for their own ends. He emphasised that Adam/ Smith was a "Moral Philosopher" rather than an "Economist"/ The book that he has incorporated into his Diploma Work was an old edition of "The/ Wealth of Nations" that George Wyllie had lying around his home. When I mentioned that the pages of his book have yellowed he said that he was delighted with this because it gave it an antiquated appearance" (these notes from the conversation are in Wyllie's file)

Adam Smith wrote the book "The Wealth of Nations" that is the object used as George Wyllie's Diploma Work

George Wyllie has used a Penguin edition of "The Wealth of Nations" as the object for his Diploma Work.
