Nature Morte
Printmaker: Bytautas, Alfons, RSA · b. 1955
The artist has written of this piece;
"The print is a 'polymer photogravure' (also known as 'solarplate' etching) and the image was created from a photograph taken by me of a still life that I had set up in a friend¹s studio.
A photographic positive image was made in the darkroom and altered by painting (and splashing!) black gouache on top. The image was then exposed onto a special light-sensitive printing plate.
The print also uses a technique known as 'chine colle' where the image only is printed onto thin Japanese paper, which is simultaneously bonded onto the backing sheet of thick European rag paper during the printing process."
