North Sea from Viking Venturer
Artist: Squire, Geoffrey, RSA · 1923-2012
Geoffrey Squire produced three large paintings on this theme from 2000 and the Diploma Work was the first of these. The inspiration for the paintings was the artist having been invited to join Aberdeen Search and Rescue on their vessel. The firm that supplies the rescue vessels is called Viking, hence the title. The subject matter was also informed by a storm at sea that the artist had witnessed at Elie in Fife where he lives. The essence of the painting is a semi abstract, brutal geometric frame work that has been imposed on an equally brutal, natural force. (see transcript of telephone conversation between Geoffrey Squire and Collections Assistant 2006-03-23 in Squire's file).
