See letter from Arthur Kay to RSA dated 1937-07-09 in archive box 'Letters from old 1928 file, gifts and bequests" "I have now put out the two small por/traits of Geo P. Chalmers which I prop/osed to you for the Academy. They are/ very small.. The earlier one, when he was an Associate....the other/ later, is a self portrait & more staid/ as befits a full member" According to inscriptions on the reverse of the painting the self-portrait was painted when Chalmers became a Royal Scottish Academician. In this letter however Kay says that he believes the portrait was not by Chalmers "seems to/ me not a self-portrait but a sketch by George Reid"
